Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set. Proverbs 22:28 KJV
First, this was a matter of Law for the people of Israel. Deuteronomy 19:14 forbad the moving of landmarks that established property lines in the land. These land allotments were given by God. To move them not only harmed your neighbor but was also an act of rebellion against God. Second, I see a valuable application in this for us today. The truths of God’s Word are established as landmarks. They set the boundary between what is right and wrong. They are for our protection and spiritual prosperity. To move them, as many have, to the left or to the right for personal gain jeopardizes the well-being of many people and is an act of rebellion against God. May we respect and maintain the ancient landmarks.
Lord, in our changing times when absolutes are denied and all truth is believed to be relative, I am grateful for the ancient landmarks of Your Word. They provide a safe boundary that enables me to be protected and prosper in Your ways.
