Responding to Fear with Prayer

By September 1, 2012No Comments

Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the LORD will be with you. 2 Chronicles 20:17 KJV

A confederacy of three armies had joined together to fight against King Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah. They were justifiably alarmed. The king did what all of us should when we are afraid, he prayed. There will never be a better first response for any of the frightening experiences of our lives. He honestly expressed his fear, worshiped God for His goodness, recalled the promises of God, and asked God to help. That’s a great way to pray for anyone, at any time. God’s response was immediate: do not fear, I will fight for you, and be with you. By faith the people did what God told them and celebrated His victory with worship and praise. Facing our fears with prayer replaces them with faith.

Lord, this is a good example for me. I often feel paralyzed by fear. I do not like this about myself but I am grateful that on such occasions I can turn to You in a prayer of faith and receive the very help I need. I thank You for Your ever-present help in my life.
