Our Conquering King

By April 25, 2011No Comments

Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them. Psalm 68:18 KJV

Psalm 68 is a victory song composed by David to celebrate his conquest of the Jebusite city of Jerusalem. He understood it to be the conquest and victory of God. The Apostle Paul quotes this verse in Ephesians 4:8 and applies it to the ascension of Jesus Christ. Christ returned from His battle on earth into the glory of heaven leading captivity captive. Through His death and resurrection He conquered Satan and death, and returned to God those who once were rebellious, and prisoners of Satan. We are the spoils of His great victory. We once were the rebellious, but now God dwells among us! And Christ, who has received gifts, has distributed them among us, that we might use them to serve Him.

Lord, thank You for descending and winning the victory necessary to set us free from captivity. You are our conquering King and we gladly serve You. In Your ascension, You gave us gifts for the building up of Your Church, may we use them joyfully, responsibly, and effectively.
