Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the LORD: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy. 1 Chronicles 29:9 KJV
Although in the Old Testament, here is a wonderful example of New Testament giving. As David concluded his preparations for the building of the Temple he first set the example and then asked the people for a love offering that would provide the needed funds for its construction during the reign of Solomon. The amount collected was overwhelmingly generous. I call this an example of New Testament giving because each of its elements is emphasized in the New Testament. The need and opportunity were clearly explained, a good example was provided by David their leader, they were not coerced but asked to give willingly, and as a result they gave from their heart with joy.
Lord, help me avoid giving because I feel like I have to, but instead help me to understand that everything I have comes from You and enable me to give willingly and generously with joy from my heart.
