Over 90% of church budgets will be created between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31 this year. Given that fact, it seems appropriate to provide helps and ideas to improve the budget making process. These tips provide simple dos and don’ts of church budgeting.

  • Do use the budgeting process to help formalize the planning you have done and continue to do.
  • Do allow staff members to do their jobs without being micromanaged or having to ask about spending money on items that are already in the approved budget.
  • Do get others involved in the budget process. People involved in the day-to-day ministry can assist in accurately forecasting costs for the next year.
  • Do allow the budget to increase communication and confidence in one another and in the church’s leadership.
  • Do take time during a business meeting to cover the budget with the right amount of information.

  • Don’t take action regarding the budget into your own hands.
  • Don’t wait too long to communicate (or worse, to not communicate at all).
  • Don’t repeatedly ask for money.
  • Don’t fly through the budget part of a business meeting.
  • Don’t try to change the budget every month. The budget is a guide. If the budget is followed correctly and tracked through the year, it will give clear indications of what areas need attention.
