Wisdom Without God

By June 9, 2011No Comments

And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith. I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit. Ecclesiastes 1:13-14 KJV

Wisdom is a very important word in the book of Ecclesiastes, used 52 times. Solomon had God-given wisdom at his disposal (2 Chronicles 1:6-12), and so do we (James 1:5), but God-given wisdom is not the subject of these verses. Solomon gave his heart to seek out man’s wisdom, apart from God. Throughout recorded history think of all that man has sought to know and understand. 2 Timothy 3:7 says we are always learning but never coming to the knowledge of the truth. For example, evolution teaches there is no reason or purpose for our existence; we are the products of time plus chance. Solomon was right, if we take God out of wisdom, then all the wisdom of man cannot give meaning to life.

Lord, my life (and all of life) has meaning because You made me. Not only have You given me life but also purpose in living. I know where I come from, why I am here, and where I am going. Because of Your involvement my life is not empty but full of meaning.
