The Virgin Birth

By August 27, 2011No Comments

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14 KJV

This is one of the best known and most significant Old Testament prophecies concerning the Lord Jesus Christ and His birth. Spoken by Isaiah over 700 years before the birth of Christ this is key to the veracity of Scripture and the affirmation of Christ as God the Son. When Joseph was in turmoil concerning what to do about the pregnancy of Mary, the angel of the Lord appeared to him and quoted Isaiah 7:14. It teaches the virgin birth. Mary was not with child through fornication, she was with child by the Holy Spirit. It teaches the divinity of Christ. He is the Son of the Highest. His name is Immanuel, meaning God with us. The prophecy of Isaiah and the birth of Christ assure us that God is with us.

Lord, how comforting this portion of Scripture is. It builds my confidence in Your Word and the promises You have made to me. It builds my confidence in Christ as my Savior. As both God and man He was qualified to deal with my sin. It assures me You are not working against me but for me.
