The Healthy Sign of Blushing

By August 12, 2014No Comments

Read Jeremiah 5 – 8

Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? Nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among them that fall: in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down, saith the LORD. Jeremiah 8:12 KJV

Have you have been caught doing something or saying something wrong and blushed? Usually such blushing is an uncontrolled response of shame and embarrassment. We are often even further embarrassed by blushing itself. Here, according to the Lord, such a response is a good sign; it indicates a healthy conscience at work; a conscience which understands the difference between right and wrong, and feels shame because of sin. When we are no longer able to blush or feel shame it indicates the opposite, a conscience seared or numbed to sin (1Timothy 4:2); what God says is wrong is no longer seen as a reason for shame. Although many even today would call that progress or enlightenment, God refers to it as a moral decline and a fall into judgment. We live in a time like that, when people boast rather than blush over sin. Do you still blush? That is a good sign.

Lord, I have often felt bad about blushing, but I wonder if I feel worst about the blushing than I do about the sin. Help me maintain a healthy conscience that convicts me of sin and causes a feeling of shame when I am caught in it.

A question to ponder: If it has been a long time since you have blushed, why; is it because of consistency in your walk with God, or growth in the ways of the world?
