The Desire of Our Heart

Read 2 Chronicles 1 – 4

In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, ask what I shall give thee. 2 Chronicles 1:7 KJV

At the start of his reign as the new king of Israel, Solomon got apart from everyone and everything to speak with the Lord. The Lord gave him the opportunity to ask for anything he wanted. If you could have the desires of your heart, what would it be? In our day many would quickly respond: riches, wealth, or honor. From his heart, Solomon asked for wisdom and understanding that he might lead the people of Israel well. God, who looks on the heart, was pleased with his answer; as a result, God not only gave Solomon wisdom and understanding, but also the riches, wealth, and honor he did not ask for. A man with God’s wisdom and understanding will know how to properly use all three. Perhaps not in the same way, but in a real sense anyway, God asks each of us what the desire of our heart is; our answer, seen in life choices we make, determines what we get.

Lord, it seems most of us spend our lives thinking about what we want. Too often we think too small and selfishly. Help me desire what is most pleasing to You for I know that will also be the very best thing for me.
