Read Exodus 20:1-17
For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it. Exodus 20:11 KJV
Imbedded in the Ten Commandments is a wonderful key to interpreting Genesis 1. Two common ways of discounting a literal interpretation of the chapter, even by professing Christians, have been to call it a myth or to say the days of the creation week actually refer to very long periods of time; Exodus 20:11 helps to dismiss both explanations. The Ten Commandments were given to Moses by God; while His voice spoke the words His finger wrote them in stone. Being part of those commandments, verse 11 has authority; it refers to the six days of creation as both historically true and consisting of 24 hour days. As Christians we are left with the choice of either letting the Bible say what it says or listening to those who are determined to explain it away. If we cannot accept the plain teachings of the Bible regarding creation, then we will struggle with its other teachings.
Lord, thank you for the clarity of your Word. Your Word is true. I trust it more than the words of men. It provides an understanding of life no other source can. I rejoice in both its explanation of life and its direction for living.
A question to ponder as you sleep: If Exodus 20:11 is an uninformed or false statement regarding creation, then how would that affect our understanding of the rest of Scripture?
