Read Joshua 23 – 24
Know for a certainty that the Lord your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until yr perish from off this good land which the Lord your God hath given you.. Joshua 23:13 KJV
Many years ago I had the privilege of hearing Dr. Francis Schaffer speak just before his death. He was making final speaking tour because he knew his days on earth were short. I’ll never forget what he said, “Accommodation leads to accommodation leads to accommodation.” In other words, once we begin to compromise it doesn’t stop, it keeps going. If Joshua had been there he would have shouted, “Amen!” In Joshua 23, he was old, didn’t expect to live much longer, and was very concerned for the people of Israel. He didn’t see them driving out the Canaanites, but instead content to share the land with them, and from years of experience, he knew such compromise would destroy them. That was Dr. Schaffer’s concern. Compromise remains our greatest battle. It doesn’t matter what we’ve done in the past, it can destroy us tomorrow if we stop obeying the Lord.
Lord, I’m in the battle and feel the constant pressure to compromise here or there, often it is hard to hold the line, help me obey, cling, and love you that the temptation to compromise will lose its strength.
