Our Source of Encouragement

Read 1 Samuel 26 – 30

And David was greatly distressed; for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God. 1 Samuel 30:6 KJV

There are times when every previously assumed resource of comfort and encouragement is not available. On this occasion the people that David knew and trusted the very most turned on him because of their own pain. As a way of expressing their anger and discouragement they even wanted to stone him. This incident is a stark reminder of how undependable people can be. There are times in every person’s life when our best friends will turn on us. Those we thought would always be available for support can change without warning. On such occasions, where do we go for help, who do we look to for support? David encouraged himself by going to his God. The Lord will never forsake us, He will never turn on us, and He will always be available to give strength and comfort when it is needed. If you are in need of encouragement then look to the Lord your God.

Lord, I am grateful that whenever I have needed You I have found You to be faithful, an ever present help in times of trouble. Instead of being the last one I turn to, may I learn to make You the first one I look to for encouragement.
