God’s Ability to Hear and Help

Read Isaiah 56 – 60

Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. Isaiah 59:1-2 KJV

I have a hearing problem, without the help of my hearing aids I simply can not hear most of what is being said to me. This is actually just one of many limitations I have. There have been times I failed to help people who needed it simply because I am limited in how much I can do. God has no such limitations. He has no hearing problem, He hears every prayer and plea for help we make to Him, and He has no limitation in His ability to help us, His arm is not too short to reach us in any situation. Often what seems to be a problem on God’s side is actually a problem on our side. Here the reason God had not answered prayer and provided the requested help was sin. Sin separates us from God. Too often the problem is we fail to hear what God is telling us in His Word, we don’t like what He says, or don’t want to hear it. We also fail to reach out to Him in confession as we should.

Lord, how foolish of me to ever blame You for shortcomings on my part. It is not Your hearing problem but mine that separates me from You. I fail to hear Your Word about sin in my life. It isn’t that Your arms are too short, but mine. Too often I fail to reach out to You in confession of sin seeking Your forgiveness. Next time I start to blame You for not responding to me, help me to remember it is me who has failed to respond to You.

A question to ponder: When God’s hand seems shortened or His ear seems heavy, what should my first response always be?
