Friendship Tested

Read 1 Samuel 20 – 22

And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done, what is mine iniquity, and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life? 1 Samuel 20:1 KJV

Saul was determined to kill David, and so, David went to his friend Jonathan and asked why. Jonathan was very close to his father and David, so when David came with his complaint Jonathan didn’t want to believe it. This was one of those difficult moments when friendship is tested. Jonathan proved his strength of friendship by devising a plan to discover the truth. It was a hard revelation for Jonathan; his father did want David dead. But with that knowledge, he then took the necessary measures to protect his friend’s life. Very few of us will ever be called upon to protect a friend’s life, but there are times when a friend may need our protection. I want to bring just one to your attention. Being familiar with God’s Word, we know the danger that lies ahead for our unsaved friends. That knowledge makes us responsible to protect them, by helping them to the path of life.

Lord, how grateful I have been for friends you placed in my path to help and protect me. You provided friends to share the gospel with me, friends to share sound advice with me, and friends to help me along the path You chose for me. Help me to be such a friend to others as well.
