A Vision of God

Read Exodus 24:1-11

And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness. Exodus 24:10 KJV

Moses, Aaron, Aaron’s sons, and the 70 elders of Israel went up the mountain to confirm the covenant between God and the people of Israel. There, they saw a manifestation of God. There is a seeming contradiction in the Bible with seeing God. On the one hand, Scripture teaches it is impossible to see God and live (Exodus 33:20; John 1:18). On the other hand, there are passages, like this one, that speak of men actually seeing God. The explanation seems to be that while it is impossible for man to see God in His unveiled glory and live, man is able to see God in a veiled manifestation. Every appearance of God to men in the Bible is veiled in some way. Notice here the eyes of this group of men only saw below His feet. The splendor of God was such that they either could not or dared not raise their eyes above His footstool. How great it will be in glory to see Him face to face!

Lord, in the day of glorification how awesome it will be to see you in all your beauty. Until then, help me be responsible to what you have revealed of yourself in creation, the Word, and the Savior.

A question to ponder as you sleep: In verse 11 it says this group of men ate and drank before the presence of God, what would have been the reason for this?
