The Word, Our Creator

Read John 1 – 2

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. John 1:1-3 KJV

The opening statement of the Gospel of John strikes us as an intended repetition of the opening statement of the Bible. It connects the start of this Gospel with the beginning of creation, and in fact, takes us before creation to the One responsible for it. We learn three essential truths about the Word, who is going to be the key figure of this Gospel. (1) At the start of creation, the Word was already in existence. He was not part of creation; He was in existence and present when creation took place. (2) The Word existed prior to creation. The evidence presented for this is twofold: He was with God, and was Himself God. (3) It was the Word who created all things; God the Word is the Creator! No part of creation occurred without His involvement. This is strong theology to start what many call a simple gospel but as John’s gospel is simple to understand it is also deep with truth.

Lord, how can we ever think You do not care for us when we realize the extent You went to identify with us and meet our need. It is beyond our ability to comprehend that the Creator would do so much for His creation, especially the rebellious creatures we are. May our attitude toward You always display the respect and gratitude You deserve.

A question to ponder: How does it encourage you to learn the Word was present at creation, existed before creation, and was in fact the Creator?
