Read Mark 5 – 6
And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. Mark 6:34 KJV
Jesus had taken His disciples to a wilderness area with the intent of getting away from the crowds and providing them with an opportunity to rest. Verse 31 informs us His ministry schedule had become so full they did not even have time for an uninterrupted meal. But even in the wilderness a large crowd had found Him. When He saw the multitude His first thought was not frustration but compassion. He saw them in need and was compelled from within to meet their need. Like most today, they felt lost, like sheep without a shepherd. They were looking for answers, but had no one to lead them. Jesus met their need in three ways. First, He offered them leadership as the Good Shepherd who loves the sheep and gives Himself for them. Second, He taught them; He alone offers the words of eternal life. Third, He fed them. Jesus understands we have spiritual and physical needs.
Lord, I am grateful You are never too tired to look on me with compassion. Thank you for being my Shepherd, my Teacher, and my Helper in all the cares of my life.
A question to ponder: If Jesus denied Himself and looked on the multitudes with compassion, then as His followers how are we to look on those who surround us?
